In the beginning of a relationship, everything always seems to be the best and you never want it to end. Sometimes, though, it was just not meant to be with the person you thought you were in love with. Now comes the hardest part of the relationship: the breakup. There are a few ways that can make this uncomfortable time even worse for both of you, so don't try them.

It used to be a "Dear John" letter was one of the worst ways to hear that someone did not want to be with you anymore. Since technology has taken over the airwaves, the new form of a "Dear John" letter is text or email. Both of these ways are still not the right way to go. Just think about how you would feel to receive one of these letters. Do not be a coward, you need to take responsibility and do this face to face.

This is something that is very personal for both of you. There can be a lot of different emotions flying around, to spare each other from any type of embarrassment; do not make it public. You may think that this is a safe place where emotions will be kept in check, but this is not always true and public outbursts can be worse. Once you have the face to face, be very clear about what you are saying. If you just say something like "I am not happy," that really leaves things open-ended. Be firm and clear so that both parties fully understand.
