What is Considered Cheating in a Relationship?

What is considered cheating in a relationship? How far can someone go before they are guilty? When should you start to worry that your partner is cheating on you?

In today’s internet-connected world, online communication has opened the door for online cheating or email affairs. Is this really cheating or not? Is it OK to keep regular email contact with that ex while you are in a relationship? How much can you talk to an opposite sex friend before it begins to infringe on your relationship with your partner?

There are two sides to the issue. On the one hand, if you are doing something that you would consider cheating if your partner did it to you, it’s probably cheating. If you’re doing something that makes you wonder “Is this cheating?” it’s probably cheating.

On the other hand, it’s possible to be too controlling or overly jealous. While it’s normal to be concerned if a partner seems to be cheating, a healthy relationship has a certain level of trust involved. You shouldn’t need to be checking your partner’s emails, or constantly asking them where they are and what they are doing, especially if they have been faithful up to this point. It’s possible to have a conversation with someone of the opposite sex and still be completely devoted to your partner. Being overly controlling is one of the signs of an unhealthy relationship.

Every person is different and has a unique view on what is considered cheating in a relationship. Although you might not consider corresponding with that one-time special someone to be cheating, your partner may not feel the same way. The best way to find out what your partner considers to be cheating in a relationship is to ask. Communication in relationships is incredibly vital. The last thing you want to do is ruin your relationship with incorrect assumptions. Honesty can be hard, but it will keep the relationship alive.

Usually issues are not black and white. Give your partner the benefit if the doubt, and be willing to sacrifice a little. This does not mean that you have to die for your partner, but be willing to live with their preferences in mind.
